Here is a beautiful and unique American 4/4 violin made by Samuel Jansen Miller of New York 1923. I have an interesting old paper on the maker and he apparently used very old woods in his instruments. The maple has some of the most gorgeous flame Ive ever seen. The varnish is an oil varnish that has reddish and golden hues. There are no cracks or repaired cracks. There is a wedge under the fingerboard and the height and angle are correct. Its fully lined and blocked. The two piece back has small cleats on the inside and possibly on the top. The back of the violin is pinned at the bottom and top. On the inside, there is writing on the neck block and on the left rib above the label.

This violin has a lot of character in the carving and the maker seems to have have obsessively followed Heron Allen’s detailed book on violin making.

Its one of the most unique violins Ive owned. I obtained it from the son of a country music fiddler who highly praised its tone.

If you’re looking for a real player, this is it! It is delightfully rich, even, and has a powerful tone, a joy to play!
