This is a very visually appealing c1870s 12” A H Andrews full mount terrestrial table globe.  The overall condition is antique excellent, with the expected signs of wear for a 19th century antique globe.

This listing also includes a 12th Edition A H Andrews How To Use Globes manual.  The overall condition is antique average, and it also has the expected wear for a 19th century antique book.

Description & Condition - Globe:

The cartouche reads: “Andrews'   12 Inch...Terrestrial Globe...Chicago...AH Andrews & Co “.

Like most large globes of the era, this globe has a very detailed gore (e.g., forts, rivers, mountain ranges, African tribes, ocean currents, isothermal lines).  This was also Andrews' deluxe table globe and it has all the "bells and whistles", including:  a metal time dial with pointer at the North Pole, a full metal meridian, a decorative metal tripod base, and a horizon ring with a zodiac & calendar horizon band.

Note: This is not just the deluxe table globe offered by Andrews, this is also an iconic Andrews globe.  The cast iron Gothic stand and 12 sided horizon ring are signature Andrews, and make this globe both instantly recognizable and one of the most visually compelling globes of the era.

This globe reflects the world as it was after The Civil War (1865) and before the colonial division of Africa following the Berlin Conference (1884).

Empires still dominate Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and northern Africa (e.g., Austrian-Hungarian, Ottoman).  Much of Africa is still under native/ tribal control.  And North America and South America are being settled (e.g., eastern Oklahoma labeled Indian Territory) .  This globe is a great read, and appeals to both our visual and National Geographic sides.

The overall condition is antique excellent, with the expected signs of wear for a 19th century antique globe.  When I acquired the globe it had a ~1/2" circular hole near the analemma, and signs of neglect (e.g., water stains in southern hemisphere, flaking horizon band and paint).  As part of the professional repair of the hole, horizon band and stand, the globe was also cleaned and re-varnished.  Unlike many 19th century antique globes, this globe does not require any additional repairs; and it is now ready to be displayed for another 150 years.

Note: traces of the hole are still visible in the right light, please see the last picture.

The gore is fully intact, and the text & colors are crisp and clear.  There are no dents or cracks, and the globe rotates freely on its axis.  The full ring meridian has no splits or cracks.  The horizon ring has no splits or cracks, and the tripod base has no cracks or chips.  The globe has all of the original hardware, including the “barrel screw” that secures the meridian to the base (usually missing).  Please see the pictures for additional condition information.

Some key date indicators are:

  • 1867-Russian Alaska sold to USA (USA territory on this globe)
  • 1868-Austro-Hungarian Empire formed ('Austro-Hungary' on this globe)
  • 1869-Suez Canal in Egypt ('Suez' appears on this globe)
  • 1872-Pesth becomes Budapest (still Pesth on this globe)
  • 1872-Franz Jospeh Land established (Franz Joseph Land appears on this globe)
  • 1873-Yellostone NP in Wyoming (Yellowstone NP appears on this globe)
  • 1876-Lake Edward discovered to be a separate entity from Lake Albert (only Lake Albert on this globe).
  • 1878-Serbia/ Montenegro/ Romania gain independence (still part of Turkey/ Ottoman Empire on this globe)
  • 1885-Congo Free State established in Africa (no Congo Free State on this globe)

Also, a globe of this era has many interesting notations, and geographic descriptions.

 For example:

  • Forts are noted in America: Ft Laramie, Ft Scott, Ft, Union, etc.
  • "Indian Terr" (now Oklahoma)
  • "Sandwich Is"  (now Hawaii)
  • "United States of Columbia"  (now Columbia)
  • "Patagonia"  (now Argentina)
  • Turkish Empire displayed  (no longer exist)
  • "Nubia" (now multiple countries)
  • “Chinese Empire” (now China)
  • "Bud or Tibet"

The book was first published in 1859, and has printed boards with a cloth spine.  It also includes illustrations of Andrews globes, including: the full mount globe, the offset mount globe, the hemisphere (hinged) globe, and the lunar tellurian.

The cover is soiled, and the binding is a little loose; however, the interior is in antique good condition.

 Miscellaneous:

If you have read this far you are probably a collector, and you have seen pictures of this globe and book - but only pictures.  Because Andrews globes and books do not come up for sale that often.  You also know that this 12" full mount model rarely comes up for sale and is referred to by some collectors as a unicorn

If you are not familiar with Andrews globes, I would encourage you to visit the website of a reputable, antique globe dealer like Murray Hudson Antiquarian Globes, or George Glazer Gallery.  Fair warning: they both have many great globes for sale and you may end up spending more on globes that you had planned to.  Just have your talking points ready for when your significant other starts asking questions about the credit card bill.  Happy hunting.
