PUBLIC NOTICE:  BECAUSE OF RECENT PROBLEMS WITH
CERTAIN BUYERS ON EBAY WHO SEEK TO TWIST THINGS
AROUND, OUR POLICIES TOWARDS WHAT WE SELL HAS HAD
TO BECOME TIGHTENED UP.  PLEASE ASK ALL QUESTIONS
ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE ABOUT TO CONSIDER BUYING OR
BIDDING ON - BEFORE BIDDING OR ENACTING A "BUY IT NOW."
WE ARE NOT EXPERTS ON ALL OF THE ITEMS WE OFFER, NOR ARE
ALL OF OUR OBSERVATIONS MADE IN OUR ITEM DESCRIPTIONS
OF SAID ITEMS WE LIST ON EBAY PERFECT, AS SOME THINGS
ARE NOT APPARENT TO US DURING THE LISTING PROCESS.
SOMETIMES THINGS ARE STATED TO BE OUR OPINIONS & THUS,
AS THEY ARE ONLY OPINION, THEY ARE NOT TO BE CONSIDERED
A DEFACTO DESCRIPTION - i.e. ONLY OPINIONS.
  WE TRY TO BE
ACCURATE, BUT SOME PEOPLE OUT THERE LIKE TO TAKE SMALL
POINTS OR A COMMENT AND USE SUCH POINTS & COMMENTS TO
DEVELOP ARGUMENTS AFTER THEY HAVE PURCHASED AN ITEM,
BASICALLY JUST TO SEEK A PARTIAL REFUND TO GET THE ITEM
CHEAPER OR FOR LESS MONEY.  WE ALSO DO NOT SEEK TO DO
BUSINESS WITH BUYERS WHO MAY BE SEEKING TO BUY
SOMETHING WE OFFER NOW OR BID ON SOMETHING AND
WIN THE AUCTION, TAKE POSSESSION OF THE ARTICLE THEY
BUY OR WIN & THEN SEEK TO EXTORT A PARTIAL REFUND
FROM US & STILL KEEP THE ITEM - CITING SOME MINOR POINT
AS A MEANS OF CONTENTION TO DEVISE AND OPEN UP A CLAIM
UNDER "EBAY'S BUYER PROTECTION PROGRAM."  SUCH ACTIVITY
IS ILLEGAL UNDER EBAY BUYING & SELLING PROTOCOLS & RULES
& WE SEEK NOT TO BE A PARTY TO SAME.  PLEASE BE SURE THAT
YOU ARE FULLY INFORMED AS TO WHAT YOU ARE BUYING
BEFORE YOU BUY IT.  THERE ARE NO RETURNS.  ALL ITEMS ARE

UNUSUAL "DOUBLE PILLAR"
ANTIQUE C. 1880 GEORGE WALE
BRASS MICROSCOPE WITH
INNOVATIVE SPIRAL TUBE
COURSE FOCUS FIRST PIONEERED
/ INTRODUCED IN THE 1867
"HAWKINS & WALE"
MICROSCOPE

Although this microscope lacks it's eyepiece
and also lacks its condenser and the upper
glass stage - it is extremely rare.

Engraved on the rear brass "swivel base" to
the main horseshoe base right near the
"double pillars" in tiny letters it reads
"GEO. WALE - PAT. APP. FOR".

We can not find any serial numbers or
assembly numbers on this microscope.

This impressive microscope stands 9 1/4"
TALL in the closed position.  In the
closed position with the inner drawtube
fully extended, the scope stands 12".

The simple objective is clear and works
fine - and is unsigned as to maker -
although WALE was a master LENS
MAKER and this lens may in fact have
been made by GEO. WALE.

The inner tube for the eyepiece measures
7/8" DIAMETER or just 1/64" over that -
which would be the 'wiggle room.'  The
eyepiece was not of the "Tophat" form,
so finding one that is appropriate is not
difficult.

Retains no original lacquer finish.  Appears to
have been cleaned of same and polished
decades ago - and thus has taken back on
a nice darkened patina.  Check out the
accompanying photographs.

The course focus works fine.  The fine focus
works fine as well, but heavy use over the years
has witnessed the fine focus knob itself
becoming very slightly bent.  One of two
condenser knurled retainment knobs
is broken off - as can be seen.

Most of the brass components are of a very thick
and heavy brass.  The main tube is made of
very thick brass.

With what appears to be the original mirror and
mirror yoke, as it looks identical to that
shown in PADGIT'S book "A SHORT HISTORY OF
THE EARLY AMERICAN MICROSCOPES" found
on page 136 "Figure 67."  It is interesting to note
that the mirror and yoke have GOLD PAINT on them
and the application of same is very old.

Not perfect, but a rare scope never found available
on eBay or on the market.
