Maker E, Leitz
Original/Reproduction Original

This is a nice early 1900s Ernst Leitz microscope with its original box. The microscope base is stamped E. Leitz Wetzler, No. 82473, Filiale, New York.  The initial E. is Ernst, The serial number indicates a 1905 production date, and the term Filiale is German for subsidiary or branch (the company was founded in Wetzler, Germany where its headquarters remain. A sales branch was opened in New York in 1892).

This microscope is fully functional. Brass tubes, knobs and arm have spots of tarnish and rubbing but are very good overall. Base looks to be black enamel over brass, and there are scratches and rubbed areas where brass is showing through the enamel. All knobs and pivot points function appropriately. The two lower power objectives are clear. The highest power objective was not tested as I believe it is ideally for oil immersion. Two of the objective are Bauch & Lomb, and the third is Leitz. There are two eyepiece lenses (5X & 10X). One is stamped with a number (212034) and there other isn’t, although they are otherwise similar. Not sure if they are original. There is also an empty brass container for an additional objective or lens (which I do not have).

The box is original, as is the paper card on which the serial number and date are written. At one time the card was likely attached to the box, but it is now loose. The box is solid, but has seen some repairs to the back where it appears some small nails and screws have been used and there are some cracks in the wood. There is tape residue to the top of the box. The locking key, mechanisms and latch are no longer present. This is important, as the door does not latch closed. Buyer should be aware of this because if the scope is carried in the box and the door swings open, at the wrong angle the scope or objectives could slide out of the box.

This microscope alone weighs nearly 10 lbs. I have experience shipping and selling delicate, heavy or expensive items such as this antique. The box and microscope will be boxed separately and the entire package will be double boxed and shipped insured and with a signature requirement. Please see my feedback and bid with confidence. If you would like more information or more photos please don't hesitate to ask.
