Here is an exceedingly rare pair of argillite figural bookends that date from the mid to late 1800’s I presume, that originated in the Northwest Coast. One represents a bearded man wearing a hat and the other represents his female counterpart wearing a frock. Maybe a priest and a nun?. The male figure measures 6 ¾” tall (with his head on), while the female measures 5 ¾” tall, and they are both very well carved. Now the damage report. The male’s head is off completely; there are remnants of an early and poor gluing job. His nose is chipped and the brim of his hat has been glued on; again a poor job. The female bookend is in good shape except that a section of the columns on her side have been broken and re-glued. I think in the hands of a good restorer, these problems can be rectified; I don’t dare do it myself. The bottoms have a piece of felt and a round bandaid on them, probably to level them. (They do stand straight; the chair I was photographing them on is un-level). I still believe that these rare items would be great in any Native American collection!
