Radiant heat return panels are used in ‘sleeper’ or ‘sandwich’ type radiant heating applications where tubing is to be placed above the subfloor and beneath the finished flooring surface.  Return panels are necessary to redirect tubing 180° as per typical zig-zag layout across the floor.  Additionally, panels are cut at the jobsite to create 90° and other angles as necessary to complete the desired layout.

Panel grooves are “U” shape, unlike other brands that are flat or dado milled.  This makes for a better fit, increases thermal transfer, and requires less silicone.  Panel grooves are designed for 1/2" nominal I.D. tubing (5/8" O.D.) and can be used with most any brand of PEX, PEX-AL-PEX or EVOH coated 'Oxygen Barrier' PEX that meet the same 5/8” O.D. specification.  Other brand panels require use of smaller, proprietary, odd size tubing such as 5/16” that is more expensive, uses proprietary fittings, does not accommodate transfer plates and has much less heat capacity.

Our return loop panels are APA rated plywood for use in flooring and pair with common 23/32” plywood or OSB that can be found at most any hardware store or lumber supplier.

Straight run sleeper tracks are generated by ripping a 7” to 7 ¼” wide panel to allow a ¾” to 1” gap for placement of tubing and omega shaped aluminum transfer plates.  (Note: most hardware stores or lumber yards will make these cuts for free or for a small fee when purchasing plywood or OSB if you don’t want to rip them yourself).  Making your own tracks and using omega shaped transfer plates conducting heat above the sleepers (rather than no plates or limited contact from flat plates placed beneath the sleeper panel [as is the case in some poorly designed brands], you will save money upfront and create a highly efficient in-floor heating system to save money throughout the life of your system.

Installation

Rough fit all panels and sleeper tracks on floor prior to adhering to make sure no final adjustments are necessary and that tubing will end at manifold locations as desired.  Screw panels every 8” and between arches.  Never place screws inside of grooves or within 2” of panel edges.  Place a ¼" bead of Aluminum Heat Conductive Sealant [available in our store] or other sealant compatible with tubing into the base of the groove just prior to placement of tubing.  Press or tap tubing as necessary using a rubber mallet to set tubing flush within the groove.  Temporarily affix a flat piece of wood or plastic over the arches to restrain the tubing from shifting while uncoiling and laying the rest of the tubing. When laying of tubing is complete, remove temporary restrains.  Apply Aluminum Heat Conductive Sealant to gaps between top of tubing and side of grooves. Trowel sealant flush with top of panel and allow to dry.
