The American Review: A Whig Journal of Politics, Literature, Art and Science

New York: Wiley and Putnam, 1845.

FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING, of one of the most celebrated poems in American literature, Edgar Allan Poe's THE RAVEN.

Published under the pseudonym "Quarles", "The Raven" brought Poe instant literary fame, quickly becoming one of the most discussed and recited poems in the country (although it did little to improve Poe's consistently dire financial situation). The appearance in the American Review is the accepted first edition; the publication in the New York Mirror on January 29, 1845 was printed from advance sheets of the American Review.

The volume also includes Poe's story "Some Words with a Mummy" (pp. 363-370), and his poems "The Valley of Unrest" and "The City in the Sea" (pp. 392-3). Octavo, contemporary 3/4 leather boards with marbled paper; spine with dual gilt titles to the black leather spine, as shown. Some damage at the lower right corner of the upper board, else light rubbing, good shape with joints splitting but hinges intact. The whole volume (Jan- June 1845; engraved portraits, index, 656 pages) offered. Occasional foxing and toning (as always; moreso the first ten or so pages at the lower corner, as shown); The Raven generally clean and bright. Bookplate on the front pastedown. Marbled page edges. Slight odor of antiquity. Rare, particularly in a contemporary binding. Measures 9" x 6" x 2". Good luck!
