This is the somewhat scarce, original 1948,First Edition of this well illustrated and detailed unit history of the famous 2nd Marine Division during WW11.
The history covers the early formal activation of the division and its heritage, the Battles of the division on Guadalcanal, the mop-up on Guadalcanal, time resting and training in New Zealand and the fight for Betio etc.
The remaining chapters of the book cover the division in its bloody fight for Tarawa against the Japanese forces,Saipan and the heights of Tapotchau,Garapan,Tinian and finally their last battle on Okinawa.
The book closes with photos of the Medal of Honor winners from the 2nd Marine Division and photos of the division's commanders and battle death and casualty statistics.
The history is illustrated with many black and white photos of 2nd Marine troops in action,Japanese prisoners,Japanese fortifications, landing beach views,Marine artillery, division officers, many battle scenes etc. There are also several color two page spread pictorial maps of Guadalcanal,Betio,Okinawa etc.Very attractive color in-text maps. The color pictorial map endpapers show the route of the division in the fighting in the Pacific during WW11.A quality and nicely illustrated WW11 Marine Corps Unit History.
Actual book size is 8 1/2 by 11 1/4 inches.Condition is near fine a nice, tight, complete and very clean and bright copy.Slight rubbing and fading to covers,Marine Corps emblem and 2nd Marine Division patch embossed illustration on cover is bright and attractive as is the similar illustrations, on the spine, title lettering on spine also bright and attractive.Light wear to cover board edges with very slight bumping to cover board corners.Front and rear inner hinges are tight and all interior pages are tight and intact.Interior pages are essentially clean with some occasional slight dustiness.Illustrations are very clean and bright as are the color maps.Color pictorial endpapers are bright and attractive as well.
This edition has its original color pictorial dustjacket partially intact condition of the dustjacket is good only. There is fading and rubbing to the front of the jacket, some smudging and dustiness to front of jacket, some tears and stresslines to jacket edges and corners. The back of the jacket has about a three inch by three inch piece missing from the bottom of the jacket, also small tears and stresslines etc.The spine is mostly intact with some chipping to spine tips. The jacket flaps are intact but also have wear with smudging and dustiness, rear flap has tears etc.to top of flap. The front of the jacket still is somewhat bright and attractive. Thus overall condition of the dustjacket is good only but the book  itself is very  nice and in very collectible condition.
