Introducing the Hottest Line-up on the 2018 Bullion Market!

It is always great news when a new market opens to the global precious metals community. Once again, Scottsdale Mint has been very busy making it happen! Brand new for 2018, Scottsdale Mint, in conjunction with the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) members, is issuing what will ultimately be an astounding 8-coin set. The ECCB is comprised of the eight Caribbean island members, Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Commonwealth of Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

The excitement surrounding the highly successful launch of the Eastern Caribbean 2018 Bullion Coin Program (EC8) simply refuses to settled down! That really shouldn’t be a surprise, considering Scottsdale Mint’s unwavering commitment to produce some of the most amazingly fresh designs and top quality bullion coins on the market.

This 2018 Eastern Caribbean Central Bank 5 Coin Collector Set provides the first 5 releases of one of the most sought-after new bullion coin series on the market.

Antigua & Barbuda

First up is the 2018 Silver 1 oz Antigua & Barbuda Rum Runner. The coin is issued under the banner of Antigua and Barbuda, the two major islands that comprise this single sovereign state. Positioned between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, these beautiful Caribbean islands are rich in exotic beauty. Antigua and Barbuda is not only rich in lush tropical beauty, but also in historical intrigue! This is where the theme of this stunning coin originates.

Colonial plantations, sugarcane, molasses, rum production, fierce competition, high taxes, rum running (smuggling), and yes, Royal Navy cutters and pirates! To this day such stories bring to life the history of those dangerous times of the Caribbean Islands. They also have inspired the scene depicted on this first release of the EC8 2018 Coin Program, the 2018 Silver 1 oz Antigua & Barbuda Rum Runner.

Breathtaking Design

The obverse of the coin will be common to the eight EC8 2018 releases. The inset features the Raphael Maklouf effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Distinctive laurels of evergreen shrubs frame the portrait on either side, nearly filling the center inset. A narrow band encircles the rim, which includes the inscriptions, “EASTERN CARIBBEAN CENTRAL BANK” at the top, and “1 oz .999 SILVER, QUEEN ELIZABETH II, 2 DOLLARS” at the bottom rim.

The reverse features an 18th century pirate ship, as viewed from the shore. All sails are raised, and a forward line holds the ship fast. Consistent with Scottsdale’s design standards and craftsmanship, the fineness of detail displayed on every aspect of the large ship is simply amazing! The same is true of the entire scene.

A tall cloudbank threatens in the distance, but ultimately gives way to clear skies. On the shore three wooden barrels of rum are prominently displayed, stacked off to the right. An open, half-empty bottle is resting on the ground nearby. We might wonder what became of the sailor who had done the taste testing…

From the vantage point of the viewer, standing a short distance from the barrels, the entire scene almost takes your breath away! Its composition and elements are framed perfectly. The inscriptions include “ANTIGUA & BARBUDA” in a very fitting bold script. Also included is the year of release, 2018.

St. Kitts & Nevis

Second up is the 2018 Silver 1 oz St. Kitts & Nevis Brown Pelican. The 2018 Silver 1 oz St. Kitts & Nevis Brown Pelican captures a beautifully inviting aerial view just off the cost of Saint Kitts and Nevis. The fine detail displayed on the featured subject, framed by a wide-open view of the coastline is nothing short of a personal invitation to visit this wonderful island country.

Refreshing Coastal Breezes

The reverse features a finely detailed brown pelican, wings fully spread as it rides the coastal breezes off Saint Kitts and Nevis. This curiously-shaped bird is very prevalent throughout the Eastern Caribbean islands and is the national bird of Saint Kitts and Nevis. The low clouds in the distance open to a beautiful, bright sky. With several sailboats navigating through the relatively calm waves, it is certainly smooth-sailing! The coastline stretches far into the horizon.

The entire scene is displayed in a circular inset that is positioned a little lower than center. Very finely-engraved wavy lines encircle the inset out to the rim. Interestingly, the offset circular inset allows the lines to be very close together at the bottom rim and then spread further apart toward the top. The tip of the brown pelican’s right wing has broken free of the inset and superimposes the fine lines. The overall effect creates a remarkable depth of field to the scene. Truly stunning! Inscriptions include “St. Kitts & Nevis” at the top rim in a very nice script style. The release year 2018 is positioned just inside the inset at the top.

Dominica

Third to release is the 2018 1 oz Silver Dominica Nature Isle. The astounding natural beauty of the island nation of Dominica is poignantly captured by its common name, the “Nature Isle of the Caribbean.” An actively-evolving volcanic island of the Eastern Caribbean, Dominica is part of the Lesser Antilles chain. Dominica is lush with pristine rainforests and mountainous volcano-peaks, presenting some of the most interesting hiking experiences in the region. Home of Boiling Lake, one of the largest geothermal-active lakes in the world, demonstrates the powerful on-going effects of the deep volcanic activity.

There could hardly be a more wonderful place to take in the wonder of creation and unwind from the constraints of our pressurized schedules. The design of this 2018 1 oz Silver Dominica Nature Isle reminds us of the healing beauty that is available to us in this wide-world.

Explore, Experience, then Relax

The scene featured on the coin’s reverse is presented within a circular inset. Almost like a portal into another world, we capture a glimpse of this special place, the Nature Isle of the Caribbean! A beautiful young woman is shown casually reclining on a rocky outcropping looking out over the bay. The view she takes in seems somewhat serene, with the calm waters stretching to the volcanic mountains in the distance. A sense of the island’s lush Caribbean vegetation is seen in the palms off to her right.

Yet, the island experience is not all serenity. As pictured by the sea-plane coming in for a landing, Dominica also welcomes tourists from around the globe to enjoy the natural beauty. Also, many are drawn here for the exhilaration of experiencing the wonders the island’s famous attractions, including Waitukubuli National Trail.

Grenada

Forth in the line-up is the 2018 1 oz Silver Grenada – Spice Isle of the Caribbean. Grenada is one of the finest and most popular tourist destinations in the Eastern Caribbean. Whether your interests include the pristine white sand beaches or the stunningly beautiful coral reefs perfect for scuba exploration, the water recreation opportunities are amazing! The centuries old historical landmarks and wonderful cultural events also provide insight into the mix of cultures of these warm and gracious islanders that make Grenada such a special place. Grenada is not only referred to as the Spice Isle of the Caribbean because of its centuries of international spice trade (primarily nutmeg). It can also be said that a week spent on this island can even bring a bit of spice back into your life!

Intriguing Diving Paradise

The coin’s reverse depicts a beautifully intriguing underwater scene featuring a pair of scuba divers. The two are shown as silhouettes against a backdrop of the vast ocean depths off the Grenada coast. They are descending ever deeper toward an ancient shipwreck. The details of the ship have long ago been erased by the deep ocean current. Yet, the remains of a tall mast still stand. A large coral reef fills the foreground, which is very nicely detailed.

The overall design is one of the most pleasing of the EC8 series to date. It displays a great sense of depth of field. The detailed coral reef in the foreground gives way to the first diver in the near distance. Next, the ship’s mast appears to stand half the distance from the second diver. This has the effect of pulling you into the scene to appreciate more of its detail. The inscription “GRENADA” is arched at the top rim, with “2018” immediately under it.

Montserrat

Fifth on the tour is the 2018 1 oz Silver Montserrat – Emerald Isle of the Caribbean. One of the Leeward Islands of the Lesser Antilles chain, Montserrat currently operates as a British Overseas Territory. Known as Emerald Isle of the Caribbean, the reference is directly tied to the prevailing influence of early Irish settlement. This traces its roots back to the early 1600’s European colonists, who were primarily of Irish descent. Interestingly, even the very shoreline of this island resembles that of Ireland.

Certainly one of the most well-known modern historical events affecting Montserrat was that of the 1995 eruption of Soufrière Hills volcano. Although it had been dormant for centuries, its sudden eruption devastated the southern portion of the island. This included its capital, Plymouth, and the airport. Even today, after two-decades, most of the southern portion continues to be designated as an “Exclusion Zone” and uninhabitable.

This, however, has not prevented the northern section from continued growth and development. This includes strong tourism. Some of the most beautiful Caribbean shoreline cliffs, caves, and pristine black sand beaches draw large numbers from all over the world. Wonderful cultural events, natural scenic tours, and amazing native food and local winery events are available year-round.

British Union Jack and Erin of the Emerald Isle

The reverse design of this stunning 2018 1 oz Silver Montserrat EC8 series features a stylized adaptation of the two primary elements of the Montserratian territorial flag. The British Union flag (Union Jack) is displayed at an angle in the upper left area of the coin’s center inset. At the same angle, in the lower right is the Coat of Arms of Montserrat.

This shield depicts Erin, the fabled female personification of Ireland, standing in a fine full-gown. In one arm she holds an Irish harp (the official emblem of Ireland) and in the other, a large Christian cross. The release year of 2018 is inscribed on the shield. The backdrop is filled with bold vertical bars. The inset is encircled by a narrow, very finely-engraved reeded-band. Inscriptions encircling the rim include “MONTSERRAT” at the top, and “EMERALD ISLE OF THE CARIBBEAN” at the bottom. Also, filling the space between the top and bottom inscriptions are a series of alternating small and larger dots.

This highly-popular series has a very limited mintage of only 25,000 per release. Its fresh design is also a stunning addition to the overall series. This 2018 Eastern Caribbean Central Bank 5 Coin Collector Set provides a great way to get into the set or as a gift to someone close you know will love it!
