BUILD YOUR OWN TRADITIONAL SAW SHARPENING CLAMP; SEE WHY WOOD IS BETTER

Recently I have needed to replace my old Disston saw vise, not because it isn’t a good vise but because it is has badly worn parts that need fixing often.  I also sharpen a lot more saws than most people and need to be more efficient.  Therefore, I wanted a saw clamping method that allows the saw to be clamped up once and filed from both sides.  The simple answer to this is actually inspired from another design I have which uses a standard leg vise.  I also offer that plan on eBay from time to time.

This new design is intended for use with a standard woodworking vise.  It allows the saw to be positioned and clamped once while supporting the full length of the tooth tine.  Crosscut saws require filing from both sides.  Once the saw is clamped it is simply rotated in the vise as a unit to access the opposite side, greatly reducing the handling time normally involved with a standard saw vise.  It is also designed for use with my filing guides.  The guide simply rests on the jaws and is slid along in front of the work area, creating the ideal system for tradition sharpening of hand saws.  For a complete understanding of this, please go to wkfinetools.com and read my saw sharpening articles.   If you are in need of a good way to maintain your hand saws, you may want to check this out.

I am now offering Build Plans for this saw clamp and the matching guides.  The plans are drawn to fit a standard woodworking vise like the one shown in the pictures.  It is a 7” Columbia but also fits two other similar makes of vice in my shop, Wilton and Utica.   The plans include complete instructions and also describes options to assist with adaption to your specific vise.   Like most good things the design is simple, practical and effective.  The clamp performs well, is light weight and easy to build.  It also looks proper in a traditional work shop and can be built in just a few hours using simple hand tools.  The material cost is low, especially if you keep a scrap box with remnants of completed projects.

The plans are drawn in CAD and fully dimensioned.  They also reveal the secret to getting the jaws to clamp evenly for the full length and suggest options for adapting it to other vises and your preferred filing position.   I am offering the plans for a limited time at a low price in hopes of assisting those interested in traditional hand saws and sharpening methods.   Also included with the plans are dimensioned drawings of three different filing guides designed for use specifically with this clamp design.  Each guide is for a specific crosscut saw configuration.  All are explained in my saw sharpening articles posted at wkfinetools.com.

The plans will be delivered on five, 11 x 17" sheets with complete dimensions and instructions plus one additional sheet with four pictures of the prototype clamp.  You will also receive drawings of the three filing guides 20x20, 25x25 and 30x30.

This item is build plans only.  None of the other items in the pictures or the original clamp and guide are included.  The duck and all the tools stay with me.

The price for the plans includes first class postage to anywhere in the 50 United States of America.  I will ship international but the buyer must pay actual postage, which will vary per your location.

If you are in need of a saw vise, this could be your best option.

I do not offer returns on plans so make sure you want them before buying.
