Vintage Wooden Hand-painted Japanese Noh Actor Doll

Piece is masterfully carved and detailed, face has a ceramic type paint, giving the impression of the mask

Small stress crack in the chin but with no separation

A Japanese wood okimono carved in ittobori style and painted in colored gesso depicting a Noh drama actor in the role of Lady Izutsu standing holding her fan, the figure set in a rectilinear base appears to be incised Shishin saku (Made by Shishin)

Artist utilized a carving technique often found with netsuke carvers called Ittobori meaning 

"single cut" - Effectively chip carving!

The Noh play called Izutsu is taken from the classic 10th Century Japanese novel "Ise Monogatari", as were the plots of many other Noh and Kabuki plays.
