Metal Sterling Silver 84 hallmark of Imperial Russia
Antique Eastern (Russian or Ukrainian) Orthodox small, fine silver medal pendant featuring iconic images of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with Child Jesus, and Saint Barbara (Varvara, according to the Russian spelling). Sterling silver of most likely Imperial Russian origin, bears the "84" silver hallmark. Handmade by a master silversmith c. 19th century. The original necklace loop is absent; a small hole might have been drilled later in order to continue wearing the medal as a necklace. The medal is slightly scratched and worn out due to its age and wearing. Authentic artifact from Europe, sound and wearable. Could have been worn as a devotional, "body" miniature icon, or "Ladanka" (worn below all garments and underwear).

The obverse of the medal pendant bears an oval, iconic image of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary with Child Jesus as depicted on the venerated Holy Icon known in Ukraine as "Kozelshanskaya Mother of God", or "Mother of God of Kozelshansk". This title is inscribed below the iconic image.

The sides of the image bears two hallmarks, one is a two-letter abbreviation with Cyrillic letters (probably a trademark of the silversmith), and the "84" hallmark of sterling silver, which was the Imperial Russian standard for silver based on the ancient "zolotnik" unit.

The reverse bears an oval, iconic image of Saint Barbara, also known in the Eastern Orthodox Churches as the "Saint Great Martyr Varvara". St. Barbara is depicted wearing the Crown of Martyrdom, and holding a Cross. St. Barbara is an early Christian saint venerated in the Catholic, Orthodox and Anglican Churches, with her feast day celebrated on December 4.

The inscription in Church Slavonic framing the image translates as "SAINT GREAT MARTYR VARVARA".
