Further Background About the Image: As described in detail in The Strange Case of William Mumler by Louis Kaplan, Charles Foster visited William Mumler at his studio in June of 1871. Mr. Foster proclaimed that if Mumler were to take his picture, a spirit friend would appear on film. After some fidgeting with the camera, Mumler was able to capture the spirit of famous actress Adah Isaacs Menken wrapping her arms around Foster.
