North America’s most remote railroad is examined in all its beauty and unique operation.

For more than eight decades, the White Pass & Yukon Railway hauled freight and passengers over 110 miles of ruggedly scenic three-foot-gauge main line between Stagway, Alaska, and Whitehorse in Canada’s Yukon Territory.

WP&Y performed heroically during World War II when, under U.S. Army operation, it was a vital supply route for construction of the strategic Alaska Highway. An economic downturn in 1982 led to the railway’s shutdown following a catastrophic loss of minerals traffic.

The booming Alaskan cruise industry triggered a partial revival of passenger service in 1988, but the railway’s days as a freight-hauling common carrier – physically isolated from the rest of the North American rail network – were over.
