Airco Tip #23
w instructions & Original Box
These tools are in very good shape. (Please see photos).
1)The copper tip on the end of the soldering iron has been used lightly;
2)The Smith starter requires a flint but works well;
3)The Airco brass tip (#23) in original box and with instructions looks to be in good condition as well.
Together these tools weigh about a pound before being wrapped for shipping.
The soldering Iron measures 15.5" in length, so the package will be at least that long. The Airco brass tip #23 measures about 2.75" in length and the starter measures 5" in length.
The starter and the soldering iron come from descendants of a blacksmith and it is possible that these were part of his tools. Blacksmiths in the late 19th century and early 20th century in the U.S.A. were often general mechanics and mastered many techniques.
The Airco tip is from another source, but it, too, has an interesting past. The instructions in its box were printed in 1943 (see photo - at bottom left of page), indicating that this welding implement could have been used in WW2 ('41-'45) -- it would be too far of a stretch to say that it might have been used by Rosie The Riveter. However, what is important to note about this tip is that manufacturing has come a long way since WW2 when a human riveter was a symbol of the War Effort. Today a robot would have most likely have taken Rosie's place.
