An evening at the Elmwood Casino with SAMMY DAVIS, JR. !! Born: December 8, 1925 in New York City, NY. Died: May 16, 1990 in Beverly Hills, CA. During his lifetime he was an extremely versatile performer, winning popularity on both sides of the color barrier for his acting, singing, dancing and impersonations.
He was a member of the famed "Rat Pack". Davis appeared with Frank Sinatra and friends in Ocean's 11 in 1960, nine year before his acclaimed performance in Sweet Charity. He appeared in 41 movies, 36 television shows, 4 stage plays - starting his career at the ripe old age of three (3).
He was said to be "the greatest entertainer to grace a stage in the U. S" , on more than one occasion by more than one newspaper and media critic.
He received the Tony Award, and the Golden Globe. He has footsteps on the Las Vegas and Hollywood Walks of Fame. A great achievement was the nomination into the Kennedy Center Honorees.
A truly acclaimed "STAR"!!
The Elmwood Casino was an "International Metropolis" frequented by many prestigious performers, and other up and coming stars of colour. The Casino (no gambling) was once called "the Cat's Ass", it opened in early 1920, then again in 1934. It had been a supper club in 1943; a motel was added in 1956.
Oddity: Notice the time on the ticket was "Detroit Time", not EST.
Others who played at the ELMWOOD were DELLA REESE, FREDA PAYNE, SMOKEY ROBINSON and the MIRACLES, THE SUPREMES, and THE TEMPTATIONS.
