The word turquoise dates to the 17th century and is derived from the French turquois meaning "Turkish" because the mineral was first brought to Europe through Turkey. Turquoise gems can be found across the world, including the United States, Mexico, Iran, northern Chile and China.
Turquoise gets its color from the amount of either copper or iron present. Colors range from shades of blue to blue-green to yellowish green depending on the amount of trace elements.
Copper adds blue coloring, Chromium and Vanadium add green, and Iron adds yellow coloring to the stones.
Most Turquoise stones on the market have been enhanced in one way or another. Even top grade, otherwise natural stones often get a surface coat of paraffin wax to seal them and enhance the polish.
There are 3 main stabilization treatments for turquoise stones:
- Paraffin polish
- Polyresin polish
- Impregnation of a colorless bonding agent--commonly plastic--for basic stabilization. This stabilization increases the durability, hardness, chemical resistance and uniform appearance of the turquoise.
Turquoise is believed to be a purification stone. It dispels negative energy and can be worn to protect against outside influences or pollutants in the atmosphere. Turquoise balances and aligns all the chakras, stabilising mood swings and instilling inner calm. It is excellent for depression and exhaustion, it also has the power to prevent panic attacks. Turquoise promotes self-realisation and assists creative problem solving. It is a symbol of friendship, and stimulates romantic love.
Turquoise can aid in the absorption of nutrients, reduce inflammation, enhance the immune system, stimulate the regeneration of tissue, and heal the whole body.
